It all started on 27th March 1988, in UNIT 11 (Samuri Racing) at Silverstone race circuit. A small number of enthusiasts got together with the idea of starting a focused group that would allow the Datsun 240Z and 260Z be acknowledged as a ‘Classic Car’. At that time many models were falling prey to ‘boy racers’ and e nded up in no real fit state or worse, wrapped around a lampost.
These enthusiasts, not really knowing what they were going to create started a ‘philosophy’ that is still going to this day.
We exist to promote the Classic status of the Datsun S30 (240/260/280Z) and raise profile of this model, wherever and whenever we can.
The Classic Z Register has continually grown, intellectually, although membership peaked in the early 90’s, to the point where the car has been acknowledged as a landmark model of it’s time and The Register acknowleged as the force behind that achievement.
We welcome anybody into The Register irresepective as to what car they have, but we only focus, as a club on the 240Z and 260Z models, (we cover 280Z although that was never officially imported to the UK and the Fairlady roadster through our associated club The Fairlady Roadster Register). This is not through sn obbery, it is purely focus.
Although the 280ZX and 300ZX (Z3x series) are considered part of the Z heritage (and it has to be said that without the Nissan 280ZX we could not claim the mantle of best selling sports in the world), our members feel that the ZX had moved the model more toward a GT and away from a pure sports car. The 300ZXTT, although considered a real sports car, appealed to a different clientel, at over £30,000 in 1989 the new Z was not being bought by the same type of people who bought the original 240Z.
We exist to promote the S30 in anyway we can, through magazine articles and road tests, rallies, historic racing through to local and national car shows. We are a small club, unlikely to increase drastcially in size because the number of Z’s in the world are decreasing not increasing, but despite some commercial pressures we remain steadfast to our purpose.
We are stubbornly independent and financially sound and we hope to widen the appreciation of these fine cars as much as possible.
I do like our members to be contenious, opinionated and enthusiastic about anything to do with Z’s, but we are not ‘clicky’, we are a friendly, approachable club and every member is treated equally, whether you have just joined or our one of the original 5.
