AGM - 19th March 1989
Spike Anderson telephoned Lynne Godber to find out how many people were expected, and would he, therefore need to clean up!
He was advised to only expect the committee, however over 40 people turned up!
The Register at this time didn’t have any money in the bank, so the AGM was held once agin in Spikes Workshop at Silverstone Race Circuit.
The club was ‘in the black’ despitethe enormous cost of setting up a club and the membership was already at 88.
The Committee for 1989 was elected as follow; Lynne Godber - Chair, Kevin Cains - Competition Secretary, James Morris & Steven Sykes - Press Officers, Craig Anderson - Membership Secretary. Jon Newlyn Volunteered his services as a committee member, until he could establish his niche on the committee and take up a more specialised position.
Fourways - Kent - 23rd April 1989
Fourways Engineering provided an open day for The Register and put their rolling road at our disposal. Brian Baker was happy as his Samuri had produced better figures than he had anticipated.
Fourways laid on 5 customer Z’s for inspection
- Hick’s old rally car - still in it’s original rallying colours from the 70’s
- The Irish Sprint and Hillclimb Z. The owner originally bought John Instead’s Sprint and Hillclimb Championship Z.
- Vernon’s H.S.C.C Modified Roadsports Z, All ready for the new season.
- One Z that had just been started with a budget of £17,000 to rebuild it.
- Another Z was almost finished, and was looking very special, with a £30,000 rebuild limit. Even the engine was new.
Around 30 members turned and a great day was had by all, thanks to John and Geoff.
NEC Classic Car Show - Birmingham - 29th/30th April/1st May 1989
A Japanese car club at a Classic Car show; I could imagine the organisers (“Classic Car” magazine) throwing their hands up in horror and avidly scanning their floor arrangements to find us the darkest corner, tucked away so the public would not have the stamina to reach us. How wrong can we be?
We were given prime position! As you purchased your ticket to enter, the Classic Car Stand was directly in front of you, and to the left was us. We had a corner stand, so we were very lucky to have two fronts to our stand.
There was never any problem about an empty stand public wise with “BIG SAM” and “Super Sam” as the honeypots. We were ready to defen our right to show these cars as classic cars to anyone who questioned it, but no one did. Instead teh public flocked to find out what the Z was, asking questions till we were dropping with jaw ache.
William Galliers - 30th July 1989
Despite the damp weather the Zs turned out in force, from Yorkshire to Kent.
The Presidents Cup was on offer again, with stunning entries from Dave Jarman with his HSCC Z, Kevin Day’s recently restored Samuri, Chris Duffy with his ex-wroks rally car and Martin Curtis’s lovery rare example of a Fairlady 2+2.
The Fairlady however was beaten by three votes by Len Welch’s 260Z again, also winning “Best Z” from a choice of 58!
London Classic Car Show - 1st October 1989
For the first time the London Classic Car Show joined the Grand London Autojumble at Kempton Park. The Register actually made it to this show, with a full stand plus one!
Bob Forder bought his brothers immaculate 240Z, Steve Moreman asked if he could show his silver 240Z, Lynne Godbers “Zep” was there and Jon Newlyn’s early 240Z. Martin Curtis turned up late in his Fairlady, with officially no romm we managed to ‘borrow’ an area from the next stand to put Martins car on.
As usual a lot of interest was shown in the Zs and owners were kept busy answering questions and handing out application forms. One person turned out to be of historic interest - Peter Valentine. He had been the navigator in the Old Woking’s rally car. The only Z to have had a crossflow head in the UK.
All in all a great show.
