“Little did I think that I would be writing a letter to Z members as a Chairman ever again.  But it is marvellous to be amongst a club of enthusiasts, for the Z, once again. I would like to thank you all for making this possible for me”

Lynne Godber
Chairman
Classic Z Register

On the 27th March 1988, The Classic Z Register was formed at Unit 11, at the Silverstone Race Circuit, situated between Towcester and Brackley, about 50 North-west of London, England.

After 5 hours of airing our views the format of the new club began to take shape.  Essentially, we all felt that the new club should promote the classic value of the “S30” models.

In 1988 the motoring world accepted the 240Z as a classic car, but there was no club to support this view, until now.

To promote the classic angle, it was decided to start a register in which details of the S30 models could be held. Cars being eligible for the Register would be those upholding, as close as possible, Datsun’s original conception for the Z. Into the Register would go a current photograph of the Z, along with the following items;

  • Owner
  • Model
  • Date of Purchase
  • Registration
  • Chassis Number
  • Engine Number
  • Colour
  • Know History
  • restoration details
  • Modifications

this Register would then provide historical evidence on the Z, and hopefully this would go right back to its year of manufacture.

Enfield Classic Car Show - 28th/29th May 1988

For those members who turned up to Enfield with their gleaming Zs, thank you.  Especially as the weekend was a mud bath, torrential downpours and wellington boots was the order of the weekend!

This was the Register’s first public show and it was pleasing to be able to show a full stand of 10 Zs.  On the stand was a complete range of Zs, including an American specimen. The crowd pullers were BIG SAM and Classic Samuri.

Monday’s weather was worse and reduced the count to 5.

A big thank you went to the President, Eddie Miller, who came along to lend his support to this new club in their first venture.

Beaulieu Classic Car Show - 10th July 1988

The only place which remained dry was Beaulieu.  Many Classic Car clubs supported this classic day at Beaulieu and presented a very colourful array to the public.

The Register had 5 Zs on their stand, which covered all our Z models.

Both Len’s Z and Steven’s Z were straight from the paint shop, and they presented a pristine condition to the public.

The show was very enjoyable; it is fun to meet with other car clubs, to argue the merits of our respective cars, and chat to the public; who always recognise the other car clubs’ models, but who at a loss when it comes to a Z.

Presidents Cup - Middle Wallop - 23rd October 1988

This meeting was to close our first year and see the President’s Cup awarded for the first time to the best restored Z.

The meeting was held at Middle Wallop, which had a special display running on Samuel Cody; Britain’s first pilot, who flew from Farnborough.

It was obvious from the start of the meeting that one Z stood out for the beautiful restoration it had undergone. Ralph Godber owns his own garage and, so knows all the tricks of the trade; he cast his eye over this Z and could not fault it (which is praise indeed). It was a unanimous decision that the first Z to be honoured by the President’s Cup should be Len Welch’s 260Z (See Gallery), which had been impeccably restored by Len’s son.
