ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER MODEL

Unleaded fuel was being adopted, the L26 engine was alreadt struggling to cope with Californian emission regulations, often being difficult to start and temperamental whilst running.  Nissan decided to cure all the problems in one fell swoop - enter the 280Z.

If you understand the naming convention, you will realise that the 280 was another 200c on the old L series engine, but it was what had been done at the top that transformed the car, Fuel injection did wonders for the cars driveability and fuel consumption.  The injection system was made under license from Bosch’s L-Jetronic system.

In Europe the 260Z carried on, largely unaffected by the emmissions, and therefore not requiring the injection system of it’s American brother. It was the fuel crisis that was hurting the Z.  Sales in Britain, Germany, France and Holland combined only amounted to 600 units - it was not a good time for sports car manufacturers.
